Time traveling is possible, in a way, just that not for the future but for the past. This is what I’ve done last week when I went to see Marilyn Manson. Can’t say that I am a huge fan but when I was in highschool he was the most hardcore thing you could see on TV during the day. Or maybe I should say “they” were because Marilyn Manson is actually a band. Will keep using the first person though.
Last time I saw him (the same day I saw Alice Cooper as well, someone I eagerly wait to see again soon) his show wasn’t that impressive, he mostly wanted to shock than sing which is a big no no for me. Unless I am at a Rammstein concert. This time my impression on the concert is somehow different. First of all it started in force with a song that was too rock&roll compared to what I knew Manson was like. The first song, “Deep Six”, was an energy boost that worked instantly and got me hooked. Since then the song made it on to my playlist and it’s one of the best things I can use to wake up in the morning. Check it out below:
The show moved fast one song after the other, old or new. The shocking details or theatrics of some years ago got lost in a good rock concert with annoying breaks in between the songs. It made me feel 15 years old again, hearing some songs I haven’t listened to in years. Later, when I started having access to more than the music VH1 showed Friday night, Marilyn Manson became a small innocent child compared to all the other bands that spilled their anger and hate accompanied by heavy riffs and insane drums. It was a nice feeling but also a bit scary too because I felt like I bonded better with the SLASH audience rather than with the Marilyn Manson one.
For the first time I actually appreciated the cover he made for “Personal Jesus” and it was also very pleasant to remember the semiotics classes from Dijon where the teacher used “The Beautiful People” as didactic material.
It was a very nice way of reminding me that there is actually some message in his music but the message is somewhere under the image he uses to market himself so that the people who see this first end up seeing only that most of the time.
And to end I post below the second song that I got hooked to which was the last song of the setlist and a sad sign that the concert was over and also one of the songs I used to listen to when I was 15, though “The Nobodies” was for a while the reason why I stayed up late to watch the nighttime rock shows.
