Of Snow and Politics

img_4671Today I willingly woke up really early in the morning, and without an alarm clock, which is something I rarely do and only if bribed with coffee, in order to check the US election results. About 2 minutes after checking the news I just wanted to go back to bed, fall asleep and wake up to some different news. And if I thought that was the worst part of the day, the even worse one came when I ran across opinions of intelligent people who were endorsing Trump. So instead of keeping a close eye on this I just decided to work, listen to music and above all enjoy the snow.

img_4677We’ve had almost 3 days of non-stop snow here in Stockholm, and it is pointless to say that the scenery changed overnight. And this morning at 6 o’clock I was looking out the kitchen window, waiting for my coffee to get done, and just stared in amazement at the beauty of it all. Since the first snowflakes made their way here last week I have a large smile frozen on my face and the kid in me is happy. I know I will probably get this for 5 more months (add cold bitter wind and frost to it), but never in my life have I felt sad when it snowed. Not even when it happened at the dawn of Spring. It’s beautiful and makes me happy inside. And it goes well with coffee, cinnamon cookies, hot wine and cosy beds. All I am missing is a cat for company.

img_4681But with my cup of coffee I just went back to watching the news, which I couldn’t entirely ignore and just left them playing somewhere in the background. I was super curious about the results of these elections and I enjoyed the political satire created around them, the pup culture mobilisation and the logical reasoning brought to the audiences by experts, but right now I have no idea what to expect. I will start with watching the news, it’s my job in the end, and see where that takes me. I am excited to see the response pop culture will have to this and I think that, just like the time of the war in Iraq, we will have a lot of voices singing their discontent. If we don’t than there is something terribly wrong with the World. Not that the World order isn’t somehow changing already, and I restrain myself to say that it is falling apart. I somehow img_4684want to quote the great wizard Dumbledore and say “Dark times lie ahead”, just to make everything more dramatic and because I like Harry Potter. I would also feel tempted to say: OMG, WTF? But who am I to have a say in all this? Will wait and see, and especially I will watch.

And since I so thought I would simply refuse to pay attention to this today, here I am writing a blog that sounds more like one fit for my work blog rather than my personal rantingaboutwhateverIwant page. Time to stop now and add some pictures of the pretty snow and put myself to sleep thinking of all the political satire to come and the Winter wonderland outside my window. And listen to more HIM.

If Stockholm Open 2016

Carlovic vs del Potro

Carlovic vs del Potro

In a month in which Stockholm hasn’t seen too many minutes of sunshine, I spent 10 days close to the lights cast onto the tennis court inside The Royal Tennis Hall. Yes, it was that time of the year again, one in which I add pictures to my collections of tennis albums on social media, and moments to my collection of tennis memories. If Stockholm Open 2016 came and went faster than I wanted. Counting my days from one tennis tournament to the other, the excitement grew stronger and stronger as the first meeting was getting near.

This year’s draw was a pretty amazing one: Juan Martin del Potro from Argentina, Gael Monfils, French man soon to make it to the World Tour Finals in London, Jack Sock, last year’s finalist, John Isner one of the protagonists of the longest tennis match in history, Melo/Soares, top doubles team from Brazil, Robert Lindstedt, long favourite of mine since he was playing in the same team with Romanian Horia Tecau, and many other tennis players worth seeing. Unfortunately, 2016 was the first year when no Romanian player came here, either due to injury or different choices. Nevertheless, once the tennis started, it all became a rollercoaster ride.

Fernando Verdasco vs Mikael Ymer

Fernando Verdasco vs Mikael Ymer

One beautiful match that I couldn’t entirely see was Marcos Baghdatis vs Kevin Anderson. Baghdatis won in Stockholm in 2009 and his best results include a final in Australian Open in 2006. This time the player from South Africa was stronger, and Anderson went on to the next round.
A nice surprise came from one of home’s favourites, Michael Ymer, who stormed past a very frustrated and out of pace Fernando Verdasco with 6-2, 6-1. The young Swede bowed to Ivo Karlovic in the second round, another winner of Stockholm Open, this time from 2007.

Isner vs DelPo

Isner vs DelPo

The first round saw a blockbuster of a tennis match: Juan Martin del Potro vs John Isner. This one was some sort of clash of the giants: two very tall tennis players, with a fast serve and a good game. It was a match worthy of an ATP final, but ranking made it so that they met really early in the tournament.

Stockholm Open sweetheart Grigor Dimitrov (I am calling him that because he is very loved by the Swedish crowd), winner in 2013 and finalist in 2014, made his way to the semifinals just to bow to del Potro in two sets. It is a bit sad when two of your favourites are playing against each other. Dimitrov has a beautiful and elegant game, with a one handed backhand, while DelPo is, as many tennis publications call him, a gentle giant, olympic bronze (2012) and silver (2016) medalist.

On the other side of the draw, young Alexander Zverev made it quite hard for Jack Sock to advance to his second Stockholm Open final, but in the end the American triumphed. He met Juan Martin del Potro in the final, and last Sunday the Argentinian tennis player lifted his first trophy since January 2014, after battling injuries and surgeries.

Melo/Soares

In doubles things went horribly wrong, in a way, for the seeded teams. Robert Lindstedt, playing with Aisam Qureshi fell in the first round against an all-Swedish team: Arvidsson/Simonsson. This team lost in the next round to the finalists Pavic/Venus. Coming strong all the way to the final, on the other side of the draw, were the Swedish Ymer brothers.
One by one they took out very strong teams: the 3rd seeds in the first round (Matkowski/Rojer), Fleming/Lipsky in the second, both good doubles specialists, the second seeds Bopanna/Huey

Ymer/Ymer

Ymer/Ymer

in the semis, just to take home the trophy in Sunday’s doubles final. And they made it on the main draw due to a wild card. How cool is that? And besides the fact that it was a great performance, they also played some amazing tennis, you could see their desire to win and their “nothing to lose” motivation in every point that they played.

What more am I to say about this? I spent hours watching tennis and I spent hours in the company of some of the same, and some new amazing people that make this event worth attending, and turn it into a real tennis experience, both on court and backstage. Lots of amazing points, good fun, beautiful tennis, hard work and team work. Looking forward for the Summer and Båstad now, and searching for a tennis tournament to attend in Spring, since the one in Bucharest got canceled. Over and out from If Stockholm Open. Game, set, match, championship: Juan Martin del Potro, Elias Ymer/Mikael Ymer.

Barefoot, Careless, Free

330342_2030995650836_1776656_oMiddle June and who cares about a ceremony where the teacher puts a crown of flowers on your head and hands you a piece of paper called a diploma, in a boring event where you sit in the sun for hours to wait your turn, and your parents can’t even make it because they are at work, when just an hour away there is a place that has freedom written all over it. Three months of no shoes, no homework, no cares. Screw the city life, the hot pavements, playing with dolls, the TV set, super tempting when homework was in sight, ignorable when the purest and wildest of nature just waited to be conquered.

47329_1425075743217_6570386_nBarefoot on the lawn with shooting stars, as the song goes, those were my summers. Who needed a dress, sandals and a comb when shorts, t-shirt and messy hair were just perfect to stick your feet in the filthiest of waters in search for blackberries? Coming home stung by bees, mosquitos, bitten by ants, irritated to despair by caterpillars but still not bitten by any rat or snake or spider. Eating apples directly from the trees, all the possible berries without washing them, sharing a sandwich and tomato with your friend because both of you were hungry but none of you wanted to go home yet since it was such a great evening for fishing… then one of our parents came and we were literally dragged home just to be back on the spot the second morning. Biking through puddles, on dirt roads, up the hill, down the hill with no breaks, on river rocks, in the river, riding horse-pulled carts on an unstable piece of wood, learning how to drive one, suffering when the neighbour’s horse died, getting out of cornfields all cut by the rough sharp leaves but gloriously holding the perfectdscn3192-2 pumpkin to built a lantern, learning all poisonous plants so you know what to stay away from, splashing in the river, ending up in the middle of the cow herd and what else? I wonder how I got out of these things without any serious injury and out of some of them alive. Each of the kids had a special “seat” in the walnut tree. That’s where we were when one could hear our voices and laughter but not see us. Playing word games.

Visits to museums or European capitals on holiday? Exotic trips on beaches with white sand? Didn’t know, didn’t care, didn’t afford one either. I knew how to build my own fishing line, fix my own bike and read the signs nature would send well enough to keep myself away of any thunderstorm. It’s like when you’re out on the sea and you have to know what it means if the wind changes direction and what you have to do. Only that I was on a river bank and I knew that I have 10 minutes to get home or else I will get caught in the rain. And I knew the turkey chicks needed me as well, to get them to shelter, simply because they’re the dumbest birds ever and just sit out in the rain and get wet.

2710176742_7944a1efe5_bIt’s not fun biking into a bees swarm but I’ve done that too. But the best part was swinging in the evening while listening to the radio. The song would go “And I would fly you to the Moon and back…” and I would go back and forth in a swing for hours in a row. Until the BBC news programme would be broadcast on the radio at 9 in the evening and would ruin my swinging to music routines. It must have been a sign showing my future: music, fun, yes, but news, listen to the news too!!! Back then it was just the most annoying part of the evening. But every now and then I was allowed to sit out and swing even after the news bulletin was over. And a few hours later my mom would have to come and get me into the house. Or I would have swung all night long, in the swing my grandpa built under the grapevine. Barefoot. Careless. Free. Those days will live with me forever and left an important mark on who I am today. Home made bread anyone? Grandma’s recipe… It’s in my cupboard, will have some for dinner tonight.

Lost In Flames

With Summer long gone, it’s time to enjoy the beautiful Swedish Autumn. After travelling around quite a lot these past months, I think it’s time to enjoy the pleasures Stockholm has to offer once again.  I try to focus on the things I like and stop trying to run in 10 directions at the same time. This means that I  pay attention to concerts and other music-related stuff, tennis (soon, so soon), cats and my amazing job.

img_3562Last week-end I decided to take a break from work and just enjoy the beautiful Autumn weather. That ended up with me getting lost in Södermalm (again) for a few hours, simply because I chose to walk around in places I didn’t know, with no map and no destination. I just went around on streets that seemed nice, that had buildings that I wanted to see closer, listening to music and watching people as I walked by them. That lasted till I couldn’t feel my feet anymore, about then I decided to head back home, but not before crashing on a bench somewhere and enjoying a cup of coffee in the sun.

After seeing Backyard Babies last Friday (that was a nice concert by the way, though I never listened to them before), on Sunday it was time to attend a music-related event linked to some old acquaintances: In Flames. So it was normal that I quickly shifted from a classical music concert in Eric Ericsonhallen to Park Theatre for a DVD screening of a rock concert: “Sounds from the heart of Gothenburg”. This was the moment that impressed me quite a bit and got me listening to In Flames like crazy all week long, actually they’re still playing in the background as I am writing this. As a small detail, I’ve known the band for quite a while now as they were quite popular in the Romanian rock and metal pubs back when I was spending my time in such places. I somehow didn’t manage to see them live but I couldn’t skip this opportunity. It was for the first time in a while that I felt right at home in that audience, just sitting there and enjoying the music. img_3588I get that every now and then when I just listen to a band that I like. Music gets me! Most of the event was in Swedish, but I didn’t let this become an inconvenience. On the contrary, I got it straight away that if one has a flyer under their seat, one gets to meet the band. Guess who found a flyer under her seat? I was fortunate enough to meet Anders and Björn, who were quite amused by the fact that I told them that I am not Swedish, thus that was why I was ranting in English, and assured me that they are as Swedish as one can be. I am still waiting for my pictures, though I will probably never get them cause I am afraid I wrote my email address wrong, I was that hyped and overexcited. And I am pretty sure I smiled alot too. We also got to see their new videos before they were available for larger audiences, and both the one for “The End” and “The Truth” made me think. And the video for “The Truth” got me thinking even more and plus, I really like the song. I will have to see what I come up with, if I come up with anything, or if I just enjoy the music. Yet, In Flames’s music restores the normal brain function in a person, or at least it tries. Now I am waiting for an opportunity to see them live.

UK Week-end

img_3139A short journey to the UK was the perfect reason behind my last trip of the Summer. Since this year I surprised myself with the number of flights I was on, I said that an extra two-way-journey is nothing much. So there I was on my way to London, and after a stop at Costa and a coach ride, I arrived in Bristol happy that I found something I could send to my sister for her birthday: a rock magazine with Marillion on the cover. Marillion was pretty much the soundtrack of this trip. Alongside KajHolst and “Ballad of the Mighty I” by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on repeat.

What many would describe as annoying typical British weather I found quite pleasant… well, it’s not that nice to walk in the rain but it was more than ok because it was warm. And after I got accustomed to the climate, my kid-tourist mode took over so for two days I acted accordingly.

img_3148The fist thing I saw in Bristol was a protest, just to remind me that after my short trip I have to go back to digging through news broadcasts after them. But this time I was a witness in a live pro-EU protest. It didn’t make it in the headlines the second day, not even on RT. Other political-related items around Bristol were given by Banksy’s graffitis. Those made it in the headlines quite a lot so it is nice to actually get to see them.

img_3258Some quick highlights would include the visit to SS Great Britain which is one of the coolest boats I’ve ever seen. The technique behind this ship was very advanced for its time. Launched in Bristol in 1843, The SS Great Britain made numerous journeys to Australia. It got stranded twice and made it’s final trip back home in 1970. Right now it’s an awarded museum definitely worth seeing especially by those interested in history, early industrial development and other cool stuff like interiors, lifestyle on sea and whether or not they had cats on board long distance trips. Yes they had cats on SS Great Britain, it is not documented but they has cats used to haunt down the rats that made their way on board. The presence of the rodents isn’t documented either.

img_3299A visit to Bristol M Shed was a good opportunity to learn a lot about the city. It also included a brief presentation about protests, riots and strikes that took place in Bristol, a nice display of airplanes or the story behind Wallace and Gromit. Because the building was also hosting an expo on The Story of Children’s Television From 1946 to Today, I enjoyed looking around the stands with so many cartoon characters and I couldn’t help myself and gave a Thomas The Tank Engine miniature a forever home. I always wanted a little Thomas Engine, I simply love the series.

img_3292The first evening ended… in a pub… But before that, I attended a theatre play with audience involvement, “Trainspotting”,  Presented by Tobacco Factory Theatres Beyond. Now for those of you who know the movie, than you are familiar with the topic of the performance. However, I couldn’t watch the movie, I found it a bit too disturbing (it is true that I tried to watch it over 15 years ago), and then I didn’t really find the interest to try again. Yet the way the actors performed made it bearable and quite artistic, though it is not the classic way someone would think about when saying theatre in the UK. And I loved how they used music to illustrate some scenes. It made the whole experience seem like it was taking place in a time capsule that took you back to the 90s, though the topic itself is still quite contemporary.

img_3140Besides these highlights my short trip included a lot of walking around, gothic churches and good fun. I had a few hours to walk around in London as well. I think that for the future I will stick to going to London in November, not only because of the ATP World Tour Finals but mostly because warm weather made it full of tourists. Drink a cup of coffee in peace and quiet while listening to Big Ben while 100 people with selfie sticks teem around you. No!

And just to make my trip better, I had a two hour flight delay which is not much, compared to the 4 hour flight delay I had coming back from Helsinki, but it was enough to make me enter home at 04:11 in the morning. What can I say, Kungsgatan is a really nice setting for a late night walk.
